We all know and love Ikea so much for what it is. Simple, modern, and affordable. Okay, maybe not so much simple and more like a 2 for 1 relationship test, but let’s be honest, Ikea is so good for so many different reasons. What happens though if you want to upgrade a piece to give it that little difference you think it needs? Today’s post is all about how I took our average Ikea bedside tables and gave them a little DIY makeover!
Materials You’ll Need for Your Ikea DIY
- Ikea side table. We have these ones by the HEMNES line
- Adhesive vinyl of a pattern you love. I chose a marble one from Amazon
- Scissors
- Something to smooth out bubbles
- New knobs (optional). I got ours from Home Depot but these ones are from Amazon and very similar
Getting Started
Before you begin anything, you’ll want to make sure your top surface is clean so the vinyl attaches nicely and is sure to stick. While those are drying, you can begin measuring and cutting your vinyl pieces.
When I cut my pieces, I made sure to leave about an inch on all sides in order to fold the vinyl over the edges to stick it to the bottom. After I cut my piece, I carefully placed in on the surface and removed half of the peel. By only removing half of the backing, I didn’t have to worry about applying the whole piece at the same time and it not adhering straight. I slowly peeled the backing as I went, while smoothing out any bubbles.
Once the whole vinyl piece was stuck on and smoothed out, I began cutting the corners to fold the excess over the edges. Depending on how the corners are for your piece, you might have to get creative and have some patience. Find what works for you and go with it!
You can also change the knobs on the drawer, as well. I opted for little fancy ones which dressed up the table a little more.
And that’s it! Really! Doing both of these tables probably took me about an hour and a half, which I don’t think is bad at all! I loved how they turned out and believe it or not, these have lasted for about 3 years now with no scrapes!
Do you have any good DIYs you’ve done in your home? I also did a little closet organizing that you can check out here that helps keep things in place!
Let me know of any projects you’ve been up to!

This looks so great! I love how contact paper can make anything look so high end!

Thank you!! And yes, isn’t it crazy how it can completely transform a piece? I’ll definitely be doing this to other things too, lol
